Founded in 1942, D.V. Kapila & Co is the longest running independent law firm in Kenya and has been at the forefront of the molding and maturing of the legal and corporate environment in the country.

Our partner-led practice covers the traditional transactional sectors of corporate, banking, financial services and real estate, as well as providing advice on corporate restructuring, employment, intellectual property, data protection and ecommerce.

Whilst we are often sought out to advise on and structure our clients’ investment and divestment decisions, we also provide a holistic general counsel role to our clients, many of whom have been working with us across multiple generations.

To better service our clients and pre-empt their needs, we develop an intimate knowledge of the people and the businesses. This allows us to identify the bottlenecks and the avenues for growth, and thereby provide not only targeted advice, but also initiate opportunities for expansion and efficiency.

Whether large or small, we give our clients a service which is thorough, mindful of costs and, above all, cognisant of the commercial considerations at stake. From complex, business-altering events, to day-to-day regulatory and best-practice guidance, we provide a tailored, partner-led solution for our clients.

Whilst we routinely work alongside the large local and international firms, we take pride in our status as an smaller, independent firm, with a clear strategy and value base, enabling us to unapologetically accept or decline instructions.

As one of the oldest advisers in Kenya, our firm and its lawyers are reputed across our client base as trusted counsel, always on call to provide guidance throughout the business life cycle. We take pride in the fact that our team is held in high regard by peers in the legal industry, both locally and internationally.

The founding partner, D.V. Kapila, made his name as a litigator in courts across the country and also advised clients looking to establish a foothold in pre and post-independence Kenya. He was also instrumental in supporting those on the front line of the independence struggle, earning him the quiet respect of the nation.

Our current partnership boasts one of Kenya’s first Senior Counsel, as well as one of the minds that shaped the country’s privatisation initiative and listed company legislation. The team also comprises English-qualified lawyers with a combined 20 years of experience gained through advising on innovative and market-shaping transactions.
